Equality is a fundamental American value – and Stacey is a forceful advocate for full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
Stacey will fight to win the freedom to marry for same-gender couples, repeal the so-called “Defense of Marriage Act” (DOMA) and put an end to marriage discrimination in the states and the federal government. She will work to end discrimination in a wide range of areas – from discriminatory immigration policies that tear families apart to discriminatory policies that deny same-gender couples the same health, retirement and family leave benefits available to different-gender couples.
A strong supporter of quality health care for all Americans, Stacey will work to pass legislation in Congress to protect and increase funding for HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention and research efforts. While the last Congress increased funding in these critical areas, we are far behind where we need to be to meet the challenges of this devastating disease. Stacey also supports the Equal Access to COBRA Act that would ensure that same-sex partners and spouses covered under employer health plans have access to federal COBRA continuation coverage – a fix that is especially relevant in this economy where so many Americans depend on continuing their health coverage after losing a job.
Stacey will also work to end discrimination that deprives thousands of children the right to safe, happy and permanent homes by denying LGBT families to foster and adopt children. She supports efforts like the Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act that will pilot programs aimed at reducing homelessness among LGBT youth. And Stacey will fight to pass laws such as the Student Nondiscrimination Act and the Safe Schools Improvement Act to address harassment, bullying and violence that create a dangerous environment for LGBT students.
Stacey is also committed to passing fully inclusive workplace nondiscrimination legislation that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
