Yes, I agree with Stacey Lawson that Congress should require big banks to allow responsible homeowners to refinance at today’s record-low interest rates.
We all know there are too many politicians in Congress who talk about solving problems but instead get mired in partisan gridlock. Here’s a great idea that both parties should get behind, and quickly.
President Obama announced a plan last night “that gives every responsible homeowner the chance to save about $3,000 a year on their mortgage, by refinancing at historically low interest rates. No more red tape. No more runaround from the banks.”
Requiring big banks – that received billions in bailout funds at almost no cost – to allow responsible homeowners to refinance at today’s record-low interest rates is a good idea. Let’s send that message to Congress together.
In California’s new 2nd Congressional District, more than 60,000 families could benefit from a reduction of $200 per month in their mortgage payments. And by lowering the interest rate, the banks would have a much better chance of getting these loans repaid.
This is one of the more innovative ideas on deck in government today. It doesn’t need to cost the taxpayers a cent, and it would unleash potentially billions of dollars in stimulus that would put Californians and all Americans back to work. As Mark Steitz writes today in the Huffington Post, even Congressional Republicans can agree with the President on this proposal. Let’s not let partisan gridlock stop this great idea.
Washington needs to act now, not next year after the elections. Please sign our petition today.
